“After Dinner Ahh” Tea Blend

I had such a peaceful time on the coast last week.  However, peace isn’t something that should just be felt while on vacation – we need moments to take a break and experience serenity in our everyday lives.

I created this tea blend soon after I came home and it certainly helps in fostering the right conditions for a moment of calm.  I call it the “After Dinner Ahh” blend because the herbs making up this mix support calm in both our nervous and digestive systems.

The ingredients include:

  • 1.5 cup oatstraw (Avena sativa)
  • 1.5 cup peppermint (Mentha piperita)
  • 1 cup German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)
  • 1/2 cup nettle leaf (Urtica dioica)
  • 1/8 cup kava kava root (Piper methysticum)

(**Note: There is some controversy over kava and it can be left out of this formula if desired, especially if you have a history of liver problems.  However, I feel there is such a small amount in this blend and that it will be drunk infrequently enough that it is not an issue. For more basic information about kava and potential contraindications see here.  The other ingredients are well accepted as very safe herbs, although you should discontinue use if you have any reason to suspect allergic reactions of any kind.**)

Blend the ingredients together…IMG_0755

…and store them in an easy to access jar.

Steep a teaspoon in 1 cup of water for about 5 minutes and enjoy a moment of calm! IMG_0756

Oatstraw, peppermint, and chamomile are all herbs that will help to support a sense of peace in your body, making it easier to let go of the day’s stress and to find a moment for relaxation.  They’ll also help you with digesting your dinner!  Oatstraw and nettle also provide support with their high nutrient contents (learn more about the benefits of nettle in my post about nourishing nettle infusions).  Plus, they all taste delicious together!

Enjoy the green goodness!

Want some, but don’t have the time to blend it yourself? I have 1 oz. samples for sale in my Etsy shop!

  1. What an excellent post! We all need to be reminded to slow down and stress less and this tea sounds like just the ticket. I love sipping tea and slowly relaxing but the problem is I don’t find many moments in my day to do this. Might have to sneak away and make myself some of this blend…isn’t kava what the natives make into alcohol? (our native island Australians anyway 😉 )

  2. Hi Christine, Thanks for sharing this post on Wildcrafting Wednesday! 🙂 I have an herbal infusion that I make almost daily that’s very similar except instead of using kava and chamomile I use calendula and red raspbery leaf (1 Tbsp of each herb and 1 quart of hot water) and instead of steeping for 15 minutes to make a tea, I steep for 4 hours to make an infusion. It’s wonderful! So glad you linked up. 🙂
